Midland, Texas is the twenty-fifth most populated city in the United States.

Initially established as Midway Station in 1881, officials changed its name to Midland in 1884 because of its location – between Fort Worth and El Paso. In 2013, Forbes Magazine named this city the best for small jobs. It also landed the number four spot on the top nine fastest growing boomtowns in CNN, Money and Fortune magazines.

Known for its warm, welcoming community, Midland offers residents and visitors several museums, many different music and nightlife options and plenty of delicious food. It is also where the Permian Basin is located, a sedimentary basin that contains more than 16% of America?s oil reserves.

Energy Deregulation in Midland

When the state of Texas passed new legislation in 2002, Midland joined 85% of the areas designated to fall under energy deregulation. Energy deregulation requires utilities to allow their customers to decide who supplies their energy. Retail Electric Providers (REPs) have since entered the market, opening it up to competition. The result is lower energy costs and better plans and services for both residents and businesses.

Depending on the area in which you live, Midland has several REPs too choose from including:

Midland?s Energy Industry

The energy industry in Midland provides a significant percentage of the city?s economy. In 1923, oil was discovered 70 miles southeast of Midland. Years later, the area serves as the administrative and management center for the Permian Basin. The basin accounts for over 61% of Texas? production of oil, and more than 17% of the nation?s and state?s gas production. Several major businesses include, Apache Corporation, Choncho Resources, Schlumberger, and Kinder Morgan production.

The Midland city government also strictly monitors the production of its energy resources. The Oil & Gas Services department enforces policies and processes on business operations in order to protect the quality of the environment, in addition to the health and safety of the public.

Midland has also partnered with several educational institutions to provide funds for the formation of the National Institute for Renewable Energy (NIRE). NIRE investigates technology issues in the wind industry. The city?s beautiful weather and unused land has also made it the perfect location to generate and manufacture solar power.

Other Major Industries in Midland

Aerospace & Aviation ? Midland has the 8th largest airport in Texas, and a smaller airport, MAF. The city averages 347 VFR days per year, and the Midland College offers a well known Aviation Maintenance Technology Program. There are several major aviation companies located in Midland including, Avion Flight Center, Deer Horn Maintenance and Lone Star Propeller Services.

Local Development ? Downtown Midland is the central location for the administration of the Permian Basin. Thirty percent of the city?s revenue is committed to improving the Central Business District to help attract and retain talent. In 2003 Midland created the Downtown Midland Management District plan to promote the preservation, health and safety of the downtown community.
