Here’s a quick, interesting list of stuff you probably didn’t know about Earth Day (April 22):

1) The FBI was very concerned with conspiracies surrounding the first Earth Day.
That’s right, the FBI got involved with the very first Earth Day because it was suspected that the originator of Earth Day (Senator Gaylord Nelson) chose April 22nd as the day for his “teach-in”… which happened to also be the 100th birthday of Vladimir Lenin. And back then in 1970, this could easily have been construed as communist conspiracy.

2) There is an official Earth Day “ecology flag”
It has thirteen stripes, with a greek theta symbol on the ‘canton’. It looks like this:

3) Earth Day arose out of a reaction to an Oil Spill
Senator Nelson came up with the idea for a national environmental ‘teach-in’ for universities across the US after seeing the terrible afflictions resounding following an oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara.

4) Earth Day is observed in about 175 countries
What started off with a meager 20 million observers now garners the attention of 500 million people across the globe, several national governments and 175 countries.

5) There is an “Earth Day Anthem”
If you feel like singing now that you’re so excited about all the cool Earth Day trivia you’ve absorbed, you can warm up with the Earth Day Anthem. Here are the lyrics:

Joyful joyful we adore our Earth in all its wonderment
Simple gifts of nature that all join into a paradise
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love through out all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love through out all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world
