About Gexa Energy

Gexa Energy was approved by the Texas PUC in August 2001 and entered the deregulated electricity market in 2002 as one of Texas's original independent retail electricity providers. The company grew rapidly to over 120,000 customers and approximately 1,000 MW of peak load before being acquired by FPL Group (now NextEra Energy) in a stock-for-stock transaction completed in June 2005. Since August 2019, all Gexa residential plans are powered by 100% renewable energy. Gexa serves customers across all deregulated Texas markets and operates alongside sister brand Frontier Utilities under NextEra Energy Resources.

One of the original Texas REPs (2001); all residential plans 100% renewable since 2019; sister brand to Frontier Utilities under NextEra; historically one of the fastest-growing independent REPs in Texas

Gexa Energy FAQ

Common questions about Gexa Energy electricity plans, rates, and service areas.

Is Gexa Energy available in my area?

Gexa Energy currently serves six Texas utility territories: Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas Central, AEP Texas North, TNMP, and Sharyland. Not all plans may be available in every territory. Enter your ZIP code above to see what's offered at your address.

What are Gexa Energy's current rates?

Rates range from 6¢ to 20.4¢/kWh depending on the plan and territory, with an average of 15.4¢/kWh. The lowest rate is currently in the CenterPoint territory. Rates on this page update multiple times daily.

Why does the same Gexa Energy plan have different prices in different areas?

Texas electricity rates include two components: the provider's energy charge and the TDU's delivery charge. Since each utility territory (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas, etc.) sets its own delivery rates, the total cost of a Gexa Energy plan varies depending on where you live — even though the energy portion stays the same.

Can I get a short-term plan from Gexa Energy?

Gexa Energy offers contract terms from 9 to 36 months. Shorter terms give you flexibility to switch sooner, while longer terms typically lock in a lower rate. Early cancellation fees apply: 12-month plan: $150; 24-month plan: $295; 9-month plan: $150; 36-month plan: $295.

How do I sign up for Gexa Energy electricity?

Pick a plan from the table above, then enroll through the provider's website or by phone at (888) 270-6404. Gexa Energy handles the switch with your local utility automatically. There's no interruption to your power — the transition usually takes 1-3 business days.
