Texas has the most competitive market with over 60 retail electric providers. In deregulated states, you choose your electricity supplier while the local utility continues to deliver power and handle outages.
How do I compare electricity plans?
Compare plans by looking at the rate per kWh at your actual usage level, the contract term length, early termination fees, whether the plan uses bill credits, and the renewable energy percentage. A plan advertising 6¢/kWh at 1,000 kWh may cost 19¢/kWh at 500 kWh if it relies on a bill credit. Always check the Electricity Facts Label (EFL) at multiple usage tiers.
Why do electricity rates vary by ZIP code?
Your ZIP code determines which transmission and distribution utility (TDU) serves your address. Each TDU charges different regulated delivery fees that are bundled into your plan's advertised rate. The same plan from the same provider can cost several cents more or less per kWh depending on whether you're in Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas, or TNMP territory.

What does the rate at 1,000 kWh mean?
The rate shown at 1,000 kWh is the average cost per kilowatt-hour when you use exactly 1,000 kWh in a month. It includes the energy charge, delivery charges, and any base fees spread across that usage. Plans with bill credits often show a very low rate at 1,000 kWh but a much higher rate at 500 kWh. Use the usage filter to compare plans at the level closest to your actual monthly usage.
