Green Mountain Energy FAQ

Common questions about Green Mountain Energy electricity plans, rates, and service areas.

Where can I get Green Mountain Energy electricity?

Green Mountain Energy is available across six TDU service territories in Texas — Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas Central, AEP Texas North, TNMP, and Sharyland. Coverage depends on your physical address, so use the ZIP code tool above to check availability.

How much does Green Mountain Energy electricity cost per kWh?

At 1,000 kWh monthly usage, Green Mountain Energy plans currently price between 14.8¢ and 18.3¢ per kWh. The average across all plans and territories is 16.1¢/kWh, with the best rate found in the CenterPoint territory. These rates include TDU delivery charges and refresh several times per day.

Why does the same Green Mountain Energy plan have different prices in different areas?

Texas electricity rates include two components: the provider's energy charge and the TDU's delivery charge. Since each utility territory (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas, etc.) sets its own delivery rates, the total cost of a Green Mountain Energy plan varies depending on where you live — even though the energy portion stays the same.

How long are Green Mountain Energy electricity contracts?

Plan terms range from 12 to 36 months. Fixed-rate contracts lock in your energy rate for the full term. If you need to cancel early, expect an early termination fee — current ETFs: 18-month plan: $180; 12-month plan: $150; 24-month plan: $295; 36-month plan: $395.

How do I switch to Green Mountain Energy?

Choose a plan and enroll online or by calling their customer service line. Your new provider coordinates the switch with your TDU — power stays on during the changeover, typically within 1-3 business days.
