About Reliant Energy

Reliant Energy was founded in 2000 in Houston and is one of the largest retail electricity providers in Texas, serving over 1.5 million customers. NRG Energy purchased Reliant's retail electricity business in June 2009 when Reliant had 1.8 million customers. Reliant purchased the 32-year naming rights to the Houston Texans' stadium in 2002 for $300 million — originally called Reliant Stadium, it was rebranded NRG Stadium in 2014 but is reverting to Reliant Stadium in August 2026 after a survey showed 90% of Houston customers supported the change. The venue has hosted two Super Bowls and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

One of Texas's largest REPs with 1.5M+ customers; $300M stadium naming rights deal (2002); Reliant Stadium name returning August 2026; hosted 2 Super Bowls; same NRG family as Green Mountain, Direct Energy, Discount Power

Reliant Energy FAQ

Common questions about Reliant Energy electricity plans, rates, and service areas.

What areas does Reliant Energy serve?

Reliant Energy offers plans in six Texas deregulated TDU territories: Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas Central, AEP Texas North, TNMP, and Sharyland. Enter your ZIP code to confirm availability and see rates for your territory.

What are Reliant Energy's current rates?

Rates range from 14.6¢ to 19.5¢/kWh depending on the plan and territory, with an average of 16.1¢/kWh. The lowest rate is currently in the CenterPoint territory. Rates on this page update multiple times daily.

Why do Reliant Energy rates differ by territory?

Each TDU (Transmission and Distribution Utility) charges different delivery rates that are passed through to your bill. The same Reliant Energy plan can cost several cents more per kWh in one territory vs. another because of these delivery charge differences.

What contract lengths does Reliant Energy offer?

Reliant Energy currently offers fixed-rate plans ranging from 12 to 36 months. Early termination fees apply if you cancel before your contract ends. Current ETFs: 18-month plan: $180; 12-month plan: $150; 24-month plan: $295; 36-month plan: $395.

How do I switch to Reliant Energy?

Choose a plan and enroll online or by calling their customer service line. Your new provider coordinates the switch with your TDU — power stays on during the changeover, typically within 1-3 business days.
